Why we feel behind in life: from Rory Gilmore to the 'career woman' trope

I've fallen down the "feeling behind in life"/ "lost in life" / "starting over in your 20s or 30s" rabbit hole and I don't like what I see: an increasing number of millennials and gen z feeling like they work as hard as they can and have nothing to show for it.
In this video, I look at some narrative tropes we grew up with (and when I say we I mean mainly women and afab people), in particular at the "smart girl" Rory Gilmore type and the "plucky career woman". If you're anything like me, these stereotypes might have led you to believe that life is one ongoing acad...

I'm really confused about the "only poor people can be tortured enough to make good tortured art" thing, like... Do you genuinely think that poor people have the time or mental state to actually be creative? Even to create something out of suffering you need to be well enough to actually do it, and that could get very difficullt when your badly remunered job is consuming all of your time and energy.

Actually we can see a 30 yo Rory in "A year in a life" and she is a definition of a straight A student who after uni couldn't figure out her life. She has fallen behind as she is not comfortable with how her life is progressing, has no job and basically went from a New Yorker journalist to someone who is begging for a job that earlier she would consider beneath her, she is pinning after her uni boyfriend who is engaged and treats her like shit while cheating on his fiancee and she ends up getting pregnant with him unexpectedly. It's litteraly shown like she is a 30 yo teen mom and at Lorelai's stage of life when she ended up pregnant with Rory.

Interesting. I remember learning that you should always praise the effort, not the result with children. So you don't say "You got an A+ - you are such a smart kid", rather "Fantastic, you got an A+ - you must have worked hard to get that grade" (hopefully a little more naturally than that). That way children learn that the hard work is what is important - not something that is innate and they can't affect i.e. "I am gifted!"

There are great writers most people just don’t want to diversify what they read; they mostly wanna read about whiteness in all its mundane forms, and they make this area of nostalgia that blocks them from having a good experience and curiosity with other books. Most of what folks read is the same old white folk fiction Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Twilight, blah blah and it’s like minus LoTR the rest of those books aren’t good the world is interesting but the execution is lacking. Sure Tiktok is ruining books, but it was ruined way before that as well as fans attention spans when reading a book boils down to just toxicity, sex, and violence. Also there is a question we have to ask ourselves since the booming of social media, we have to ask ourselves as readers and media consumers do we have empathy to relate to a great book if it were ever to come out? Books require a level of openness and understanding of empathy within ourselves to connect with what we are reading. Personally, I don’t think we do as a society and that’s why we are so disappointed in what we read and what watch. Still there are great writers out there with beautiful stories to tell, but the publishing industry is racist as hell and the media even more so as they put POC folks in there shows and films but never develop them well enough. As for great writers from authors of color and women most of them are shut down quickly as these studios carry the curse of wanting to be the next Game of Thrones. Personally, it’s vexing to worry about everyone that’s why I try to write my own books with my own representation for myself. These days between toxic fans and problematic writers trash is being flung around all over the place.

I could never get into Gilmore Girls, I see the appeal but... It was not for me. But what I found funny/interesting is that I found this incredible comedy Psych, that I have only watch in RUclips clips and read in Fanfics, and what drew my attention was the light hearted humor and how whimsical this Shawn Spencer seem to be. As I watched it further, saw that Shawn was this gifted child, annoyed by the expectations of his father, and blowed up his career when he got arrested, so in this he is similar to Rory. But he bounced up, doing odd jobs and then creating the perfect one for him, with lots of help from his friend Gus. And I think that's a wonderful archetype for us lost people to have.

To the hockey player dilemma: I loved pucking around, even though I thought is was unnecessarily long I hated icebreaker with a passion I am guilty as fuck of building this idea in my head that someone playing hockey makes him hotter ehich even led to me sleeping with a guy almost entirely based on the fact that he plays hockey. (I mean I felt lonely and would've hooked up with someone anyway but I chose him not because of how he looked or who he is, but because of the sport he plays) Thats icky. That was also like half a year ago. I learned my lesson to not feteshize an entire sport. To the fan cast thingy That totally went over my head and I think its really disgusting, like had that been a women... And I definitely thirst from time to time under videos that are inteded to be at least attractive or appealing or ecen sexual, but there are boundaries that shouldnt be crossed.

Just read what you like and try to get as much out of what you read as you can. That’s it. If you wanna skim a thick book, and read a summary online only to pretend you actually read and understood a difficult book…that’s on you. From my experience I can tell when someone actually read a book to seem smart vs when they actually did read it. If your only opinions of a book are the mainstream ones, I doubt you actually engaged with the source material that much. But like I said, to each their own. Reading is good, we should all do it.

I haven't watched the video yet so here is my uninfluenced take: I had my most "tortured poet" episode when I was inpatient at a semi closed ward for the first time. I was seweslidal, so fucking emotional all the time, escalating my sh, adapting unhealthy eating mechanisms, reflecting on how bad my parents treated me, realizing I have trauma etc etc. And.. I started to pick uo writing poetry for the first time since elementary school. I do like some of the pieces I wrote back then. Its especially interesting because the pieces if that era are practically the only ones in my native language. The following years I started exclusively wrting songs and poetry in english. Being inpatient always produced a lot of art in my case. I do think that fame, money etc dont protect you from feeling seweslidal, desperate or frustrated. Which for me kind of makes one tortured. Even if there was no way she is one herself, tayler should be allowed to call her album that. Its her art. I never was a big swifty, I know her most popular songs, icluding some snippets of her new album, and I dont like what she stands for but she is talented. I have to add something on the wealth thing. My parents are upper class. I grew up in a house, which is a lot less common here than it is in the us. I went to private elementary school. Had private music lessons etc. Yeah sure. Aside from financing my hobbies I never relaly knew how much money we had, because my parents were the kind that didnt let me have the brand chocolate because it was too expensive. And never went out to a cafe to drink coffe because the prices are outrageous. Even 3€ for a frozen pizza was too much becausd home cooked meals ir simply bread ar eway cheaper. And even the support for my hobbies and stuff stopped at 14. I mived out when I was 17 and my parents paid my rent and gave me 300bucks to live with for the whole month, despite bagging my government support that was legally mine of 600€. Now I live off of government support and disability support. Which comes out to about 800bucks without even having paid rent. And my parents still have their upler class income and own property that has doubled in value etc. To be fair I do have savings in the lower 5 digits, but I cant access them because my parents have them in their name even though they were gifted to me over the course of my life. And you can easily spend 10000€. Thats enough for a drivers license and maybe a really old really shitty car (divers licenses cost about 3000-4000€ wherd I live) Just because my parents have money doesnt mean I cant live in poverty. And thats what it is. I'm way below the povery line. While my parents are above the upper class line. Yay. Edit 2 about the thing "if you're relly depressed" As someone who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder for several years. Bipolar 1 in case you were wondering. Ofc there have been depressive episodes in my life where I didnt talk, dint get up, slept 18 hours a day, couldnt crack a smile if my life depended on it, stared at the ceiling for hours, paralyzed with dread etc. those are not the ones art comes from. In my experience art comes to me in episodes where everything is really shitty like described previously for a couple of days or weeks but then you have a day or two or even just an hour, where you feel the same way but have energy. Enough energy to think and to write. Thats when I write down whats in my brain, thats when tortured poetry is born. Or mixed episodes where you have the mindset of a majorly depressed person, but the energy of a medium/minorly depressed person. Beyond that lots of art I created wasmt even about mood it was about trauma, and writing to distract yourself from getting flashbacks or dissesociating is actually helpfull..

Also a pro for goodreads, the Apple-esque integration with e-readers. I read books almost exclusively on e-readers, it syncs on whatever platform, I annotate, make notes on my kindle, and when I'm done leave a rating. Given i rent my books through libby, i can then return them, but through goodreads, still access my notes. I don't see an alternative to goodreads for people who use e-readers and use libby to get their books.

I'm a GoodReads user, but I don't participate in anything on there, except for logging the books I read, because I read a lot. I'm not sure who or why anyone would use it as a social platform, I honestly need some sort of cataloguing system so I don't read stuff that I've already read. Do you have any recommendations on a cataloguing book app? After watching the video, it looks like The Storygraph looks to perhaps be simply a cataloguing system and I could mark what I want to read and what I own. Perhaps it's a better alternative, but is it a pain to transfer over the thousands of books I've already read? I've realized a similar experience with a beer drinking app called Untapped which I quit because I was constantly asking why am I trying all these nasty beers to add to the app instead of drinking the beers I know I enjoy.

It seems to be all about numbers an hitting markers. One should look for books to have experiences that he has not had before and reading about things that he has not read before, forms of artistic expression that he has not encountered before. Reading 200 dark fantasy romance novels is like running thousands of times around in a circle inside a stadium instead of going out into the countryside and doing completely different hikes at different seasons.

For authors that are self published, piblished by a small press, or are just new/lesser known, Goodreads is kind of non-negotiable as a marketing tool. If readers left it in mass, then that would change, but as of now its probably the number one way to get reviews on your book. Even people who are avid reviewers are much more likely to post on Goodreads than they are on Amazon (meaning the Amazon product page, obviously its all technically Amazon at the end of the day). Since the product page will sometimes display the Goodreads score (presumably if there are enough of them or maybe by some other factor). It's true that a book review on Goodreads will certainly not make a book blow up or "go viral" in the same way it would on something like TikTok, its more about having that consolidated collection of reviews all in one place than anything else. That said, the platform is extremely clunky and like half of it feels like is managed by "Librarians," A.K.A. human volunteers (I don't believe they get paid) who fill in the many systemic gaps in the website itself through having some kind of admin access. I've also noticed a lot of that "connoisseur" behavior on the platform too with readers with there being a certain tone to some reviews and overall star ratings typically being lower on the book's Goodreads page than they are on the Product page for major retailers. I've seen some pretty toxic stuff even in like the religious books side of things where I would have previously liked to believe that vibes would be more positive and supportive overall. I also just tend to see lots of negative reviews where it almosy just feels like the person didn't read the book blurb or something because it sounds like the book delivered what it promised to, but it wasn't extravagant enough for them compared to other things or something. Weirdly, the interactions I've had in the horrendous forum spaces have all been quite lovely. Maybe it's because navigating those takes the patience and grace of a saint.

I own like 250 books. At least 60 unread. Which is partly because I buy copies of books I read years ago and really liked and just wanna own, partly because I buy copies of books I read as an e book or audio book and yes partly because I buy books in bookstores and then don't get to them because it's more convenient to just read an e book than to read a physical copy. I used to only read physical books. Most of my life I had a library card and read through that. Thousands of books and comics I might add. At some point I decided I wanna own books and not just read them. They bring me joy. There have been instances where I read like 20 books in a month and bought 30-40 new ones. Which largely contributed to the fact that I do have quite a large physical tbr now. I also own quite a few books that are horror/thrillers because I was into that for a while, but now they just sit in my shelf because my mental health cannot deal with that currently. Right now I have a kindle unlimited subscription and a bookbeat subscription. I rarely buy new books as of right now. I bought one series and maybe 3? Separate books this year so far. I used to be jealous of the RUclipsrs doing hauls of 100+ books when I just started collecting three? Four? Years ago. Now I just prioritize buying books I know I like because they are part of a series or I've already read them. And I don't feel the need to own fancy 100€ editions anymore. I own two of those. I think it's sad that so many people don't actually read anymore for the purpose of reading, but just as a way to show off and intellectualize themselves. I started tracking what I read this year and so far non fiction and fiction are exactly 50/50 and I've read I think 24 books. So it's going well.

You should only read for yourself. Reading won’t make people think you’re smart or cool…you should read a book or two by popular authors and genres to get an idea of what you do(n’t) like initially, but after that you should only read books you actually want to read. Doing anything else will make you hate reading because it’ll feel like a chore and not a pleasure. Even if you hate reading, get off tiktok…it’ll rot your brain more than “not reading” ever could

I'm 35 now and I've only just barely begun living. This whole idea of 'your 20's are the best' is just toxic. I did feel behind in life but I can't blame myself for that because it was told to me over and over that I was behind in life! People in real life, tv shows and movies, social media,etc.... If I had listened to them I would have a house I can't afford, a husband I don't like and children I don't want.

Taylor never really called herself a tortured poet. She only says tortured poet twice when she says "You left your typewriter at my apartment. Straight from the tortured poets department". She never said that that was a department for tortured poets that she was apart of. Also just saying, being a swiftie doesn't have to be exhausting if you don't want it to be. Being a swiftie means many different things. I, myself, am a swiftie and all I do is listen to the songs and love them. Sometimes, I do get interested in the backstory of the songs, but most of the time, I imagine people from my life in the songs I relate to. Also love the video btw 😃

At this stage “normal” means nothing. I am in my late 30’s and I have just as many friends married with kids as I have friends who are still single, some of them living with parents and family still. And I’m in the US where living at home after your early 20’s has historically been frowned upon. There is already a new normal where large numbers of us aren’t hitting traditional milestones, and those numbers will only increase. Time to embrace the new normal without shame.

I just published my 8th novel. How, you may ask. I don't do social media. I spend my time perfecting the craft. What I as an author care about is improving my work. Social media doesn't sell books and wastes time. One can write or one can dick around trying to impress people you'll never meet.

Really going through this right now. I've recently had news that I won't be able to have children because of a chronic health condition. The news was somewhat expected, I had always been told since I was diagnosed in childhood that this might be an outcome. I've always been on the fence about it as well, so I'm not that broken up about it really. But...maybe its because the choice has been made for me? Maybe its because everyone around me are having kids and I'm scared of being left behind. Maybe its one more thing, one more milestone that I have failed at? Or that I will be a disappointment to my husband. So many harsh, horrible thoughts towards myself, as always holding myself to impossible standards that I would never expect of anyone else. I know I will get through it, but its hard sometimes.
